On a cold and frosty November weekend I headed off to Walter Davies Campsite near Slough for selection weekend. I was joining over 200 Scouts and Explorers from across Berkshire, all with the aim of getting selected for one of the seventy-two places on the Berkshire Contingent for the World Scout Jamboree in the USA in 2019.
On arrival I had to check in and be given my bib with my number for the weekend. I was number 10 and would be known as number 10, rather than Harry, for the whole weekend! Then it was time to pitch tents before an opening ceremony and then straight into team building games and activities. Throughout the weekend adults were marking us for the contributions that we made to our team, these could be both positive and negative!
After cooking, a performance and the team building day one ended with a quiz and camp fire before heading off to bed, exhausted but knowing that I had to be up and ready for action by 7am.
7am soon came round and the day was started with over 200 people doing a Zumba exercise session in the open air to warm us all up. After breakfast it was more activities: sport, craft, construction and my Jamboree, where we were asked questions about Jamboree scenarios’. Lunch occurred amongst these activities and before we knew it, it was time to put down our tents, gather up all our belongings and put uniform back on ready for the closing ceremony.
Now the wait to hear if I have been selected begins…
